Popular Myth# 3: People Contribute Something Towards Their Salvation
This has to be one of the saddest and deadliest myths to have been recieved by evangelicals. The nature of it is subtle and its consequencies are severe. Eternally severe. This myth has been allowd to emerge largely due to, 1)Ignorance or 2) rejection, of the reformation doctrine Justification by faith alone. Or more specifically Justification by faith alone, through Christ alone by grace alone for the glory of God alone.
Many believers think they are saved by faith in Jesus plus good works. Others think they are saved by following Jesus example. Others do not think they can even know if they are saved and are desperately trying to work their way to heaven. Others think they are saved through ‘inviting Jesus into their life’ or saying a ’sinners prayer’. All of this reflects an ignorance regarding the work of Christ in Salvation.
Many Christians need to rediscover the book of Galatians and understand to whom Paul was writing and why he was writing. Paul, in Galatians, condemns a false gospel which was leading believers astray. What is the false gospel that he is condemning? It is the idea that people are saved through faith and works and not through faith in Christ alone.
