This is both so wrong yet so popular that it is scary! So many believers think that this is true that to question it is to almost sound like a heretic! God, for these believers, is a means to an end. Their worship revolves around themselves, their prayer life revolves around themselves, they continually look for prophesies which revolve around themselves.

God exists to 1) Bless them, 2) Make them feel good, 3) Meet their needs, 4) Protect them, 5) Provide for them etc etc. Of couse they sing to this god, they pray to this god and they even serve this god, however their god, in reality, exists to serve them and meet their needs. God, in this school of thought, is the great big ‘need meeter’ in the sky.

But why is this wrong? Does God not meet our needs? Of course He does. But first and foremost God exists for His own sake. He does not exist for our sake. He exists for His own glory, and we also exist for His glory. To think that God exists purely for the purpose of blessing us is to pervert the truth and worship a lie. It is western consumerist individualistic hedonism dressed up as Christianity.  It is idolatry. This is to turn God into a spiritual genie. Such believers need a revelation of the Majesty, Awesomeness and Terribleness of the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ.
