What about the prosperity Gospel?
The first time I came across the stream of teaching known as the prosperity gospel, (also known as word of faith or faith movement) I was shocked and disgusted. This movement is a movement which teaches several key errors. Two of its main errors, are that 1) It is God’s will that all of His children walk in divine health 2) It is God’s will that all of His children prosper financially.
While I immediatly rejected this teaching, a few years later a shift began to take place. I was studying at an interdenominational theological college and I was pretty weary from the liberal theology that was being promoted at this college. During this time I noticed that there where loads of Old Testament verses that spoke about prosperity. So in reaction to much of the liberal scholarship I moved towards a very literalist approach to scripture which was very much a form of the faith movement. My journey into the world of Kenneth Hagin, Oral Roberts, Kenneth Copeland etc led me to join a charismatic church which although was not ‘hyper prosperity’ was influenced deeply by the theology of the faith movement.
The bottom line was that for me at that time it seemed the only way to keep my faith alive. However, I am grateful that I later came across some evangelical scholarship which was commited to a faithful interpretation of the texts. The problem with those who advocate this view is not that they do not use scripture, it is just that they misuse scripture. Although this movement makes much of ‘The Word of God’ they are actually very selective in the scriptures which they preach on. Another danger in this movement is that almost every message preached is the same. Week in week out the followers of these pastors are told how blessed they are supposed to be, how they healthy they should be and how finacially prosperous they should be. Many in their churches are depressed, in debt and seriously sick and all this teaching does is weigh them down with even more burdens!
Let me say this loud and clear, true faith is the ability to walk with God through sickness, through financial hardship and through suffering. many brought up on this poor teaching do not have the spiritual resources to deal with difficulty. When their faith god does not pull through they either feel condemned, or get upset with God.
Very often faith is turned into a work, many pastors berate the sheep into getting ‘more faith’, faith becomes a thing that we must do or work at. Yet true faith comes from the true word of God. If many pastors would stop demmanding their flock to get more faith, and instead begin to preach Christ, they would discover that faith would follow their preaching!

You ’seem’ to have based your ‘new revelations’ on feelings, and circumstances, and on the lives of those around you.
You state that people in the ‘faith churches’ are down, depressed, sick, etc, and this seems to have made you re-think what Scripture teaches (or that perhaps Scriptures aren’t literal).
If 1 peter 2:24 teaches that “By Christ’s stripes you WERE healed” it seems like you think everyone should ‘just get healing’ and not be sick anymore.
But didn’t Christ teach that satan comes to steal the word from one’s heart. And didn’t Christ teach that the storms of life would come upon everybody, alike.
Don’t throw out the Scriptures, just because you don’t SEE everyone healed, etc. Don’t base your ‘relgion’ and beliefs on anyone’s experiences.
If 1 ptr 2:24 isn’t literal, then perhaps Romans 10:9 and 10 aren’t literal either (which reads: if you confess with your lips … and believe in your heart … you will be saved).
Which versus will YOU now choose to be literal and true?
Which versus could you lay your hopes on to be true, so that you can have a full assurance of salvation? If some Scriptures aren’t true and literal, then which are? How do you know you are believing the correct Scriptures as true and literal?
I choose to believe ALL Scripture as Truth.
I am healed, I am victorious, I have every need met, and thank God, I have power over the enemy (Luke 10:19).
“If you know the Truth, the Truth WILL make you free” …. there aren’t too many “FREE” christians when they won’t believe the Scriptures.
Sincerely.

Hi FOF, thanks for your comment. Before I reply to your post, may I recommend two books by two pentecostal scholars who deal with these topics much more effectively than I?
Gordon Fee, a member of the AoG has wriiten The Disease of the Health and Wealth Gospels. Fee deals with this topic excellently and like I say he is a pentecostal scholar.

David Petts was the former principal of Mattersay Hall Bible college (AoG Uk). As I am sure you know, AoG in their statement of faith believe that ‘healing is in the atonement’. Petts work is excellent and explores the bible passages in depth.

In response to your comment
“You ’seem’ to have based your ‘new revelations’ on feelings, and circumstances, and on the lives of those around you.”
If my blog gives this impression I apologise. The blog was a brief summary and not an in depth explanation of my journey. My key reason for rejecting these teachings is that they are not scriptural. That is they are based on a faulty interpretation of scripture.
“You state that people in the ‘faith churches’ are down, depressed, sick, etc, and this seems to have made you re-think what Scripture teaches (or that perhaps Scriptures aren’t literal).”
point 1) This is just an observation, a relevant one at that, i.e a large number of ‘faith people’ do not get what their doctrine says they should get. Is the problem with the doctrine or the people? If the problem is the people, then this can only lead to false guilt and condemnation and many other burdens. This is pastorally irresponsible.
Point two, regarding the question about how literal the text is. This is an important question. Any time we approach scripture we interpret it, we can do nothing else. The question that needs to be asked is; is the verse in Peter that you mention, saying what Word of Faith people say it is? Now, in the light of ‘the whole council of God’, that is, the message of the whole bible, I would have to say that this verse is not saying what word of faith people think it says. This is why scripture interpretation is so important. One of the key reasons that this verse does not say what WOF think that it says is that the context has nothing to do with physical healing.
“Which versus will YOU now choose to be literal and true?
Which versus could you lay your hopes on to be true, so that you can have a full assurance of salvation? If some Scriptures aren’t true and literal, then which are? How do you know you are believing the correct Scriptures as true and literal?”
You are asking some very important questions.
First let me say that I believe that ALL scripture is true. I am an Orthodox believer, I believe in the full inspiration of Holy Scripture and I believe scripture is without error.
However, I do not believe that every scripture should be taken literally. This is a different issue. And neither, I believe, do you.
e.g when Jesus in John 10 says ‘I am the gate’, does that mean that Jesus is a literal gate? No, this is metophoric language. Or when Jesus says it is better to pluck out your eye than to sin, should we take that text literally? If we did there would be a lot of maimed believers! And it wouldnt deal with the real issue which of course is the heart.
My point is that we need to ‘rightly divide the Word of Truth’. This means rightly interpret the Word of truth.
There are many problems that the faith movement creates for believers, I am only scratching the surface here.
““If you know the Truth, the Truth WILL make you free” …. there aren’t too many “FREE” christians when they won’t believe the Scriptures.”
Yep, and this goes for those who have decieved through faith teaching. There is a lot of error which needs to be corrected with the truth. The outcome? Believers could see a greater vision of God, and be strengthened in true faith.
I feel that I am doing a pretty terrible job of explaining this. If you dont have the cash to spare for the books I recommended then at least check out this article by Sam Storms.

Feel free to challenge what I have said or to clarify anything I have said. At the end of teh day, the aim here is to grow in the grace and knowledge of the Lord Jesus Christ.
God Bless

Yes, it is very hard to clearly state one’s doctrine and beliefs in a quick “comment” format, or even on a one page Blog …. I understand and will ‘cut you some slack’ as you cut me some …
But I do find since I’ve believed God at His Word about healing, that I am now healed and have been healed from chronic sickness for a full 6 yrs now….. all glory and thanks to God, yes, but my faith HAD to come in to play as well.
For even Christ “could do NO mighty miracles” in His hometown where the people refused to believe.
And I believe it IS the Pastor’s responsibility to encourage his congregants to believe God at His Word. Sure one must encourage in love and not condemnation, but I bet if Christ were around today, and scolded anyone like He scolded Peter and the others for their unbelief, Christ would have some mean Blogs written about Himself !!!! (ie: Peter couldn’t stay up on the water, and Christ said, “Why did you doubt?” Mtt 14; And what about when the apostles couldn’t cast out a demon, and Christ said, “O unbelieving and rebellious generation! How long will I be with you? How long must I put up with you?” -HCSB- Mtt 17:17. Whew. Harsh words.)
The Scriptures on faith, or lack of faith, are not meant to condemn, but people do FEEL condemned by these Words because they won’t look into the passages and ask God for help to understand and apply the Words.
Even as unbelievers see the “Jesus is the only way to the Father” passages as condemning and narrow minded.
These are simply FACTS that God is teaching, so that people can be saved or freed.
Facts and Truths. Not condemnation. They are meant to bring health and liberty !!
Ps 103: Bless the Lord … Who forgives all my iniquities and HEALS ALL my diseases
Mk 11:24 When you pray BELIEVE you have already received your answer and then you will receive what you have asked for
Js 1:6-7 When one asks for something from God, don’t doubt, for the doubter should not expect to receive ANYTHING from God.
Statements of Facts. Godly Facts.
NOT Condemning facts.
Just FACTS, trying to get freedom to the reader.
May you be blessed today, and receive all that God desires to give to you.
Sincerely.
