It is suggested thatMartin Luther posted the Ninety-five Theses on the doors of the Castle Church in Wittenberg, Germany, Oct 31st, 1517. Wikipedia summarises the outcome of Luthers 95 thesis as follows.
“The Ninety-Five Theses, were written by Martin Luther in 1517 and are widely regarded as the primary catalyst for the Protestant Reformation. Luther used these theses to display his displeasure with the Church’s sale of indulgences, and this ultimately gave birth to Protestantism. Luther’s popularity encouraged others to share their doubts about the Church and to protest against its medieval ways; it especially challenged the teachings of the Church on the nature of penance, the authority of the pope and the usefulness of indulgences. They sparked a theological debate that would result in the Reformation and the birth of the Lutheran, Reformed, and Anabaptist traditions within Christianity.
The reformation led to a rediscovery of truth and a global movement leading people back to a purer form of Christianity a form of Christianity which sought to be established on the written word of God rather than the traditions of men.
Many today are heart broken over the condition of the various Christian denominations. Many are crying for revival and long for God to move in their church and nation.
I think revival has become a buzz word today, everyone is looking for it but how many know what they are looking for? I think ‘revival’ in many ways has become an idol in the hearts and minds of many churches and Christians. Perhaps we should stop speaking about revival and begin instead to speak of reformation. Revival throws the responsibility of our spiritual condition on to God whereas reformation puts the responsibility back to us. Do we really think God will revive our idolaterous self worship that we call Christianity? Just look at many of the so called modern claims of revival they are full of apostacy and much of the ’same old, same old’ charismatic chaos hyped up to newer levels.
Where in these modern revivals is there a return the pure doctrine of scripture? Lets face it people, revival is big buisness these days. Revival means big bucks.
In a previous article that I posted on Three Streams (see it here), David Wilkerson says this about the current condition of the denominations.
The denominational church system appears to be in the throes of death. It has almost no influence in the secular world, no mighty power in Christ. Growing numbers of ministers are falling on all sides — to adultery, covetousness, pride and perversions of all kinds. Pastors of evangelical churches are bringing in entertainment and showmanship.
Is this not shocking?! Is this not true? Should this not cause every blood bought, Spirit sealed child of God to cry out for reformation?
I wonder what a 95 thesis would look like today? Perhaps it would be a twenty five million thousand thesis!
I will be posting a little more about this, God willing, in the days to come. In the mean time let every believer who as Jesus say’s ‘has ears to hear what the Spirit is saying to the churches’, continually search His word and ask the Lord to reform and revive our individual hearts. I know I need this in my own life. It is no wonder that John Darby of the brethren movement described the churches as ‘the house of ruin’
