“Man’s ignorance is a primary and essential condition for deception by evil spirits.”

This is a quote from Jessie Penn Lewis. Whatever you think of her or her role in the Welsh revival, you have to admit that the principle is true. Ignorence of Scripture and the ways of the enemy (as revealed in scripture) is an open door for satanic deception.
The following is also taken from Jessie Penn Lewis in her book War on the Saints
“THE BASIC PRINCIPLE FOR TESTING TEACHINGS BY TEACHING SPIRITS
Since thought, or “belief,” originates either from the God of Truth, or the father of lies (John 8: 44), there is but one basic principle for testing the source of all doctrines, or “thoughts” and “beliefs,” held by believers, or unbelievers, i.e., the test of the revealed Word of God.
All “truth” is in harmony with the only channel of revealed truth in the world–the written Word of God. All “teachings” originating from deceiving spirits–
Weaken the authority of the Scriptures;
Distort the teaching in the Scriptures;
Add to the Scriptures the thoughts of men; or
Put the Scriptures entirely aside.”
“The ultimate object being to hide, distort, misuse, or put aside the revelation of God concerning the Cross of Calvary, where Satan was overthrown by the God-Man, and where freedom was obtained for all his captives.”

The test of all “thought” and “belief” therefore is its
Harmony with the written Scriptures in its full body of truth.
The attitude to the Cross, and sin.
If true revival is recognised by
Renewed love for the scriptures
Repentance
Holliness
Repentance
Fear of the Lord
then false revival is certainly characterised by the former list. How many times in recent revivals have we saw the Authority of Scripture replaced with the authority of experience? How often have we saw the plain teaching of scripture distorted through new ‘revelations’ or used out of context to justify unbiblical phenomenom? How often have the thoughts of men been added to the word of God? These thoughts result in new practices and experiences that do not find a place in scripture. And more blatantly how many times have we saw the Word of God put aside altogether in favour of a ‘manifistations’ party?
There really does need to be a new reformation, cherished practices that do not line up with scripture need to go. Fear of the Lord is the begining of Wisdom, do we tremble at the written Word of God?
Isaiah 66:2
“This is the one I esteem:he who is humble and contrite in spirit, and trembles at my word.”
