I’ve been reading Calvin and Hobbes of late, although not written by a Christian, the author raises many relevent issues.

This one in particular reminds me of my first response as I became aware of theological complexities during my first semester at Theological College! Thanks to God’s grace I was preserved from two errors. The first being to bury my head in the shallow soil of my then current theological framework. This is the easy option when confronted with issues that are deep and complex and go beyond your current theological resources. However God is a God of truth and he desires to bring us into a deeper knowledge of himself.
The second error is to wallow in the mire of relativism. To camp by the feid of uncertainty and to call it humility is nothing other than spiritual shipwreck. Such false humility is often summed up by statements ‘the more you know, the more you realise you dont know’. This sounds impressive, yet its really pretty dumb, the more you know, if you really know it, means the more informed you become. This is not to say you do not have a growing awareness of the complexity of things, however, if all it does is immobolise you in the area of truth, then you have in fact been rendered ineffective in your faith.
